About Basilica Cistern
Built in the 6th century under Justinian, this cathedral-sized reservoir once held 100,000 tons of water for the imperial palace above. Today, warm lighting and gentle music reveal the two Medusa-head column bases and koi swimming below wooden walkways.
Insider tips
- Visit after dark — atmospheric lighting is at its best.
- Wear grippy shoes; the walkways can be slick.
