The building
Home of Ottoman sultans for 400 years. Four sequential courtyards, each more restricted than the last. You could spend a full day here. You shouldn't — three hours is the sweet spot.
Priority route
**First courtyard** — walk through. Nothing worth stopping for. **Second courtyard** — divan chamber and imperial kitchens (Chinese porcelain collection is remarkable). **Third courtyard** — the Treasury. This is the payoff. The Topkapı Dagger and the Spoonmaker's Diamond are among the great objects of the museum world. **Fourth courtyard** — the terrace pavilions with the Bosphorus view. Come at closing time for the sunset light.
