Istanbul is more kid-friendly than you think

The city is loud, chaotic, and full of stray cats children want to pet. That's mostly a good thing. What follows is the tested itinerary for families with kids age 5–12.

The kid-favorite attractions

**Basilica Cistern** — dim, dramatic, full of fish. Universally loved. **Galata Tower** — elevator to the top, panoramic terrace. **Rahmi Koç Museum** — an industrial museum on the Golden Horn with a submarine and old planes. The best kids' museum in the city. **Miniatürk** — Turkey's landmarks in miniature. Kitschy but genuinely fun. **Islamic Science and Technology Museum** — hands-on Ottoman inventions.

The kid-hostile attractions

Topkapı is long walks and hushed rooms. Chora is a 20-minute mosaic lecture. Long meals at meyhanes.

Practical tips

• Strollers work in Sultanahmet and along the Bosphorus but are difficult on cobbled backstreets and Beyoğlu hills.
• Public bathrooms are scarce; hotel lobbies and mosque courtyards work.
• Kids under 6 free at most attractions; 7–12 discounted.
• Turkish restaurants are used to families — bring the kids to dinner.

Ferries as free entertainment

The 30-minute ferry to Kadıköy is €0.75 per adult, half that for kids, and one of the trip's best hours for children. Feed simit to the seagulls off the back deck.
