Istanbul in Winter: Why It's the Underrated Season

The case for winter

You'll pay half the summer rate for a nicer hotel. You'll walk into Hagia Sophia without a queue. You'll watch snow on the domes and feel like you have the city to yourself. Bring layers.

What's different

Daylight ends at 17:00. Rain, occasional snow. Ferry schedules reduced. Some rooftop bars closed. All the major attractions open.

Winter-specific experiences

**Hammam** — never better than after a cold walk. **Sahlep** — the milk-and-orchid winter drink, served at every corner. **Kestane** — roasted chestnuts on every street. **Empty Hagia Sophia** — the light in winter is exceptional. **Snow on the Bosphorus** — 3–4 times per winter, and it's magical.

What to pack

Waterproof shoes with grip (cobblestones + rain). Warm coat. Umbrella. Layers — mosque interiors and museums are heated, streets are not.

What's closed or limited

Some Bosphorus cruises reduce to daytime only. Beach town day trips off the table. Some rooftop restaurants close.

The one week to book

The first week of December — Christmas hasn't hit European tourists yet, weather is still crisp not bitter, and everything is open.
