5 Days in Istanbul: The Slow, Complete Version

The luxury of a fifth day

Three days sees Istanbul. Five days feels it. The extra 48 hours let you cross to the Asian side, eat where locals eat, and leave one afternoon completely unplanned — which is when the city always surprises you.

Day 1 — Sultanahmet essentials

Blue Mosque at opening, Hagia Sophia by 9:15, Basilica Cistern before lunch, Topkapı in the afternoon. Sunset from the palace terrace.

Day 2 — Bosphorus and Beyoğlu

Dolmabahçe in the morning, sunset Bosphorus cruise, dervish ceremony at Hodjapasha in the evening. Dinner in Cihangir.

Day 3 — Asian side

Ferry to Kadıköy. Market at Salı Pazarı in the morning, lunch at Ciya Sofrası, walk the moda promenade for coffee. Late afternoon ferry back for sunset from Galata Tower.

Day 4 — Byzantine day

Chora Church at opening — the mosaics deserve unhurried time. Walk the land walls to the Golden Horn. Lunch at Asitane. Süleymaniye Mosque in the afternoon; the terrace behind it is the city's most underrated view.

Day 5 — Empty on purpose

Wake up without an alarm. Wander Balat and Fener. Get lost in the Grand Bazaar for exactly one hour and leave. Fish sandwich at Eminönü. End with hammam.
